Placement exceptions: transfer and non-traditional students.

Placement into 120 may be granted to non-traditional students with extensive workplace writing experience or transfer students with extensive academic writing experience, but will only be granted based on actual writing samples. Once placed in 120, these students will still need to complete the course with a grade of C or higher to receive credit for 110.

If you are a non-traditional student or a transfer student currently unable to register for English 120, but would like to be considered for placement into English 120, please provide Dr. Amy Rupiper Taggart or Dr. Kevin Brooks, the English Department's Writing Program Directors, with the following materials:

1. A letter addressed to one or both of the Writing Program Directors, describing your writing experience, either in the workplace, another school, or both.  Also include an explanation of why you believe English 120 is the right course for you.

2. A copy of any relevant transcripts demonstrating academic success. (unofficial transcripts are acceptable)

3. A writing sample, preferably 5 pages or longer, including evidence of research and your ability to incorporate primary and secondary sources.  Please provide a contextual description for this writing sample in your cover letter (i.e. where and when did you write it, for whom, etc.).

If you cannot provide a writing sample but you believe English 120, rather than English 110, is the better course for your abilities, you may still take the CLEP Exam, administered at the  NDSU Testing Center, located in the NDSU Counseling and Disability Services. You will be required to pay the exam fee (currently $85), and score 50 or higher on the CLEP exam in order to earn credit for English 110.
