Every spring, the College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences presents an award for outstanding work in Teaching, Research, and Service. Graduate students in the college are also eligible for an outstanding researcher and outstanding teacher award.
For 2007-08, the English department won three awards.
Outstanding Research Award: Gary Totten.
Since Gary joined the English Department in 2004, he has published 12 articles or book chapters, some of
which appear in his 2007 edited collection, Memorial Boxes and Guarded Interiors: Edith Wharton and
Material Culture. Dept. Head Dale Sullivan describes Gary as the model of a "balanced and
disciplined faculty member." Despite his modesty, Gary is known nationally for his expertise in Wharton,
travel writing, and American realism.
Outstanding Service Award: Betsy Birmingham.
Ann Burnett, award nominator, wrote "The amazing thing about Betsy (even more amazing than her huge
service load) is that she is an excellent teacher and researcher. On top of these additional
accomplishments, she always is cheerful and collegial." Betsy is active in service nationally, in the
university, college, and department, and for the community.

Graduate Teaching Award: Kristina Caton.
Kristina has been teaching English 110 and 120 since joining the department in fall 2006. Spring 2008, Kristina was asked to fill a vacancy in the department and teach English 380, Shakespeare. Kristina as a teacher is well prepared, thoughtful, demanding, and caring
