The Department of English awards more than $5,000 in
scholarships each year, including two scholarships for graduate
students.
MADELINE S. GITTINGS SCHOLARSHIP: Undergraduate
and Graduate Students.
The English Department awards three Gittings scholarships each year
from the Madeline S. Gittings Endowed Scholarship Fund. One of
these scholarships is awarded to an incoming first-year student in
the undergraduate English major, one to a continuing student in the
major, and one to a graduate student in English. The primary
criterion for the first scholarship is financial need; the criteria
for awarding other two scholarships are financial need and
exemplary progress toward degree completion.
ROONEY SCHOLARSHIP: Graduate Students
A scholarship awarded to a graduate student in English. Academic
achievement and perseverance in the pursuit of a degree are equal
considerations.
Community, regional, and national foundations offer scholarships for graduate students; the department will make every effort to help graduate students pursue these awards based on student interests and accomplishments.
The English department also presents two awards each year: a Graduate Student Teaching Award and a Graduate Student Paper Award.
The College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences awards a
Graduate Teaching and Graduate Research Award each year. An
English department GTA has won the teaching award each of the first
5 years these awards have been offered.
