Natalie Smith Carlson, Graduate Student Instructor

Minard 320H
natalie.smith.carlson@ndsu.edu

Education:
I am in my second year of the Master's program in composition and
completed my B.A. at Minnesota State University with a degree in English,
emphasis in literature, a theatre minor and a Certificate in Publishing
from New Rivers Press.

Academic Interests:
I am interested in the representation of women, not only in composition,
but societally and my favorite grad class so far has been Language Bias
because I learned so many things about the construction of our language
and the ways we are socialized to think about women.

I am also motivated to learn more and press my students to become aware of
and involved in social issues in our country. There are so many people
that don't get the opportunity for the education that we are currently
pursuing and I want my students to understand how we, collectively and
individually, arrive at our predjudices, and then be motivated to make
change.

Experience:
I have held several jobs in English and Theatre instruction over the last
10 years, as well as worked as a composition tutor both at MSUM and
privately. This year I will begin working at the writing center on the
NDSU campus and continue instructing composition.

Other:
I am also a professional photographer and spent the summer photographing
weddings, families, babies and seniors. I take my camera with me almost
all the time and whenever I don't have it, I will inevitably see something
that needs capturing.

I am married with two young daughters and we love to travel. We just
bought our first house and will be moving to Moorhead in the second week
of the semester, so as always, I will be insanely busy.
